Living in Northern Ireland

  • Life was clearly different for Catholic and Protestant citizens of Northern Ireland – is there a part of your identity that you feel causes you to experience things differently than your neighbor? Your classmates? Your teachers?
  • The Unionist-controlled government of Derry in the 1960s used legislation to limit the influence of Catholic citizens in politics. Through gerrymandering and blocking access to public housing, the government effectively made the majority Catholic population into a minority voting block. Can you think of instances where this happens today?
